Anne Sabourin is a director, actor, and scenic designer. She has training in dance and architecture and is currently studying towards a doctorate in performing arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, looking at the relationship between body and space. She has also trained and taught for Mime Omnibus in Montreal. Currently she is teaching courses at both Concordia University and the Université du Québec à Montréal. Anne’s work has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A show she was touring has been stopped temporarily, and one of her movement classes has been moved forward a semester. She has also had to adapt her research work to online formats, and has been noticing the importance of live body language, not just in performance, but in effective teaching as well. During lockdown, Anne did work on a film project, which used masks and social distancing measures. This caused some additional stress, but was successful overall. She continues work on projects that remain active and will resume work next year on those experiencing a hiatus. This may include adaptations that feature outdoor performance work. Anne has noticed that, while COVID-19 has forced people to confine themselves, it has also, somewhat ironically, brought artists out into society as they bring their work outdoors.
-- Sebastian Samur spoke to Anne at the beginning of September, 2020.
