Fatima Jawdat is a performance artist based in Diwaniya, Al Qadisiyah, Iraq. Having trained in theatre and fine art, she has developed an artistic practice photographing her own solo performances about political issues and feminist politics. She displays her work on social media, where they have developed an international following. Follow her on Twitter or Facebook. 1. Please describe your artistic practice and how it has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. I have presented more than one work exploring Coronavirus and its effects. These works addressed the nature of Iraqi society. In Iraq, we believe in fate more than we believe in the disease. So you find people who sometimes don't wear masks or gloves because they believe that if it was their destiny to die, gloves and masks won't protect them. Others said that it's political and that there isn't a pandemic. They are of that opinion because of Iraq's political situation and because it's gone from one phase to another due to the latest protests and events. All of this made me see Coronavirus through different eyes from a European artist living a normal life during a pandemic. This is why most of my works are somewhat surreal because I'm living in an abnormal situation. 2. What are you and any artists you work with doing to cope with the restrictions to live performance caused by the pandemic? In Iraq, there are few performance artists and that's why they don't produce many art performances. I don't know of any performance artists who created work about Coronavirus. There have been some artists in visual arts or theatre who did tackle the subject but in a direct manner. I think there's a limited understanding of performance art in Iraq. It's not known by the average person, unfortunately, and that's why performances are rare. I can say that maybe in the whole of Iraq there are no more than five performance artists. I think I'm the most active among them because I present my work on social media through images that embody a certain state, and I treat these images in my own way, where I don't need to go out to the street or face certain restrictions while doing my work. I photograph most of my works in my room. 3. Describe one of your experiments (if any) with quarantine performance. One experience that widely spread on social media is one of my works entitled "A Demonstration". I used masks to cover my entire face and body except for my mouth which is where Coronavirus spreads from. My message was clear to the society in which I live: that they don't care about this pandemic and aren't following precautions. It was a successful work and was widely shared on social media. Conceptually "A Demonstration" embodies the suffering that my country has undergone since the early beginnings of the spread of Coronavirus. I mentioned earlier that the Iraqi government's response was weak and it couldn't control transmission, which led to merchants price gouging at a time when we badly needed masks especially when the pandemic was widely spread. This meant that a lot of poor people, who were already more exposed, couldn't afford masks. The idea of the work came from here. I presented an image of a performance where my eyes were covered. I meant that we are not seeing the truth and material gain became more important than our health and the lives of people at risk. I don't forget that all the while we've had political protests against the government and we've witnessed a lot of state brutality and continuous and violent oppression. The work speaks to the crimes the government has committed against the people. Not only do they oppress us, but also they are also trading with our souls and exploiting this pandemic for personal gain. Death became an inevitability either by disease or by someone else, and the government became two sides of the same coin. That's why there could be more than one reading of the performance work. 4. What project(s) do you plan to do if quarantine continues? I have a new project about Iraqi archaeological sites, specifically Nippur in my city Al Diwanyah, that I hope to execute in order to present Iraq's archaeological treasures through performance art. 5. Has the pandemic made you renew/rethink/transform your practice? It has kind of changed the way I see people around me. It made me much closer to them and allowed me to spend much more time by their side. This inspired me to create artworks that I will present in my own way someday. I was in the theatre before and I moved into performance art because I'm always reinventing myself because I live in Iraq where the situation is constantly changing. 6. Do you have any other comments you'd like to add relating to your practice and COVID-19? This damn pandemic completely paralyzed our lives and yes I agree that there are some positives but the negatives outweigh them by far. At the end of the day, I'm a human being who wants to live a normal life. There are many things I want to achieve artistically and this pandemic stopped everything and I hope it won't last much longer. -- Interview by Matt Jones -- Translated from Arabic by Serene Husni :: Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/user2527692 :: Tumblr: http://serenehusni.tumblr.com/ :: Dalaala: http://www.dalaala.com/ 1)
